What customer acquisition cost measures
Customer acquisition cost (CAC) measures how much your business spends on sales and marketing to acquire each new customer. Lower CAC can indicate greater efficiency, but it should be evaluated alongside customer value, gross margin, retention, and revenue quality.
The formulas
- Total acquisition investment = marketing investment + sales investment.
- Blended CAC = total acquisition investment ÷ new customers acquired.
- Marketing investment per new customer = marketing investment ÷ new customers acquired. This divides by all new customers, so it is not a channel-attributed marketing CAC.
- CAC payback (months) = blended CAC ÷ (monthly revenue per new customer × gross margin).
- Lifetime gross profit to CAC = your estimated lifetime gross profit per customer ÷ blended CAC.
Why payback matters
CAC on its own doesn't tell you whether it's affordable. Payback does: it shows how many months of a customer's gross profit it takes to earn back what you spent to win them. Short payback means growth funds itself sooner; long payback means you need more cash, or more confidence in retention, to keep acquiring customers.
The lifetime ratio is only as good as the estimate behind it. This calculator never infers lifetime value from revenue alone. Enter a gross profit figure you can defend.
Assumptions to keep in mind
This is a simplified, period-based CAC estimate. Spending and customer acquisition may happen in different periods, particularly in businesses with longer sales cycles. If your sales cycle is longer than your measurement period, compare spend with the customers it actually produced, or use a longer period.
